Ulrich Neckel originally served with the artillery on the Eastern Front in 1915 but by late 1916 was beginning his flight training. Back to the East on two-seaters he eventually went to a Jastaschule, and then to Jasta 12 in September 1917. Flying with Jastas 12, 13, 19 and 6, he amassed thirty victories by the Armistice, and had received the Blue Max. His twenty-second victory was over Major C. D. Booker on 13 August 1918. After the war Neckel contracted tuberculosis and died in Italy in May 1928.

On 21 August 1917 Booker had helped bring down Adolf von Tutschek of Jasta 12, seen here recovering from his wounds. The German ace survived to fly again, but at this stage he had achieved twenty-three victories of his own. He later commanded JGII.

Karl Allmenröder of Jasta 11 downed thirty Allied aeroplanes before his death by AA fire on 27 June 1917. Although awarded the Pour le Mérite he was not photographed with the Blue Max at his throat, so this photograph is one where this decoration has been painted on after his death.
